Out Of Space Or Out Of Ideas?

by Vernon Ortiz

Do you think your closet is too small? Who doesn't? But is it really too small or are you not using your space to its full potential?

Use the Door

If you don't store anything on your closet door, you're giving up an entire wall's worth of space. Your closet door is an ideal spot to hang smaller items like shoes, ties, and purses, or you can use it for your favorite coats.

If your closet has folding doors or a door that is too small to hang a rack on, you should think about replacing it. Switching to a standard door or a flat sliding door is a very inexpensive way to increase the usable space in your closet and your home.

Get a Bigger Dresser

Many small closets are a result of the builder sacrificing closet space to make the bedroom bigger. If this sounds like your home, think about what you have hanging in your closet that doesn't really need to be on a hanger.

Want to keep everything in your closet? A dresser provides a much more compact storage space, so replacing a small section of hanging clothes with a dresser can greatly increase the number of outfits you can keep in the same place.

Think Vertical

One of the biggest sources of wasted space in closets is above and below hanging clothes. If you add a shoe rack or dresser, you may have open space above them.

Custom shelving can be a great way to use your entire closet from floor to ceiling. You can even build your closet to match your style so you have a longer space to hang coats, dresses, and similar items and a smaller space to hang shirts or folded pants.

Once your shelving is installed, you may also want to add ceiling hooks for hats or other light items.

Go Bigger

A more drastic solution that might be worth it for your forever home is to go ahead and make your closet bigger. This might mean moving a wall to turn unused space in one room into more closet space.

Another option is to increase the height of your closet a little higher into your attic if you're willing to use a ladder for items you use less frequently. Or, you could add an attic access space directly in your closet to make it easier to store out-of-season clothes.
