Four Tips For Working With The Right Temp Agency

by Vernon Ortiz

Applying through a temp agency is a great way to find work. While most work that you apply for will be temporary, there is a chance of being hired on permanently through the company at some point. To ensure that this process is successful for you, you will want to consider these four tips for working with the right temp agency:

  1. Find an Agency With the Right Connections: First, you want to find a temp agency that has the right connections. This means connections with employers that are looking to fill positions within your line of work. For example, if you work in the construction field, you don't want to work with a temp agency that handles mostly office jobs. Working with the right temp agency is going to ensure that they find a position for you faster.
  2. Send a General Application: When you are ready to apply to be interviewed by the temp agency, it's helpful to fill out a general application. This way, your application is more likely to be seen instead of placed with more specific job titles that the agency handles which they might not have positions for currently. With a general application, your temp agency will also be in contact with you about more open positions. This way, you have more options and aren't out of work for a long period of time.
  3. Be Prepared for the Interview: Just because it's an interview with a temp agency and not an actual employer doesn't mean that it isn't important. The reason employers use temp agencies is to help shift through those who are not qualified, prepared, or professional. Be sure that you dress appropriately, be honest about your skills, and bring along your resume while also showing up on time. Doing all of this will ensure that you are taken more seriously and there is a higher chance of your resume being paced along to the right positions.
  4. Check In: Finally, you want to be sure that you check in after your interview. This is going to show that you are serious about finding work for yourself. In general, though, it's a good idea to only check in about once every couple of weeks, otherwise, it's being a bit too pushy. This gives your temp agency enough time to actually find the right position for you.
